Witchmount Estate
This winery surpised the hell out of me with darn good wines a passionate cellar door manager that went above and beyond and a good vista across the lawn to the pond.
In 2008 this little winery stole the trophy from the French and won the best Shiraz in the world. The first and only time it has been won by a winery outside of France. For that reason alone you should visit Witchmount. That famed 2004 vintage has well and truly sold out but that same wine is still produced and at times the winemaker believes other vintages have been better than the one that won the Syrah du Monde competition. The wines are something to be proud of and our host made us feel welcomed and important, taking the time to show us behind the scenes of the operation and the the bottling machine.
On a perfect spring day where the big operations in the Yarra Valley would have hundreds come through, we were the only ones at Witchmount which meant we had that real personal service. Witchmount deserves to be busier because it has everything going for it including most importantly, great wines. Do yourself a favour and visit and perhaps even dine at Avanti at Witchmount, the Italian restaurant that I hear is doing great things.
